The 1975

Have you heard it!?

I am almost too excited to type, it feels like a whole lifetime since the first self titled album ‘The 1975’ was released. Having followed these guys from the start I feel like I am so proud of how far they have come. Frontman, Matty Healy was quoted to say “The world needs this album” and he is definitely not wrong.

Lyrically, this album is genius. I LOVE the way they reference lyrics to the previous album, as it seems like the band is ‘speaking’ to true fans here. It is like they are telling a story, each song fills a missing piece of the novel.

One example of this is below. The first lyric is from “She’s American” from the new album, and the second is from “Settle Down” from the first album.

A small town
Dictating all the people we get around

A big town
Synthetic apparitions of not being lonely

This could be referencing the fact that although grass looks greener on the other side this may not be the case. Also that you can be equally lonely in a busy city as you can in a small town.

There are many examples where The 1975 reference the previous album in I like it when you sleep… Go on see if you can spot them!!

Overall, the album is a good mix of punchy pop rock tracks like “Love Me” and emotional heart felt songs like “Nana”. Furthermore, they add a good dose of humour in there too with the metaphorical “The ballad of me and my brain” where Matty talks about losing his mind in a literal sense, stating “Mum check the car, it can’t have gone far”.

All I can say is that I will be playing this album on repeat for a long time!!

//Love//
